Potus and the Rabbit was inspired by the experience of Arkansas Hospice patient Linda Atkerson and her dog, Potus. Linda spent her final days of life in the Arkansas Hospice Inpatient Center, formerly in North Little Rock.
There, her husband George would bring Potus, their Miniature Pinscher, to come and visit Linda. Potus would snuggle up with Linda and a stuffed rabbit, which was a gift from Linda’s friend, Margaret Earnest.
After Linda’s death, George brought Linda’s possessions home and Potus immediately latched onto the stuffed rabbit.
This situation inspired Margaret to write a children’s book dealing with the often-overlooked subject of death. Told through the eyes of Potus and the stuffed rabbit, the story of Potus’ struggle to understand what is happening to Linda can help children understand death – something not easily explained or embraced by our culture.
Proceeds from the first printing of Potus and the Rabbit will be donated to Arkansas Hospice, in memory of Linda Atkerson.
It is Margaret’s hope that this book will be a comforting tool to those grieving and will be able to help people all over the world. A special thanks to Potus and the rabbit for providing the special idea for this story.
Arkansas Hospice Foundation is hosting a special book signing and release party for the debut of Potus and the Rabbit. The event will be on Saturday, May 3, and the public is invited and encouraged to attend!
