Hospice does not replace
nursing home care,
it supplements the care.
A hospice nurse will visit you at the nursing home at least once a week. However, your nursing home physician will remain in charge of all care. The hospice nurse will take orders from the nursing home physician.
A hospice RN is on call every night, including weekends. If the nursing home notifies you of a “change” in your loved one’s condition during the night, you may call hospice and ask for a nurse to make a visit.
Hospice also will provide medications and medical supplies related to your hospice care for symptom control and pain relief.
Other services hospice provides in the nursing home include:
- Extra bathing and personal care during the week
- Regular visits from hospice-certified volunteers
- Hospice chaplains available 24 hours a day
- Hospice social workers visiting regularly and are available 24 hours a day
- Volunteer support
- Bereavement services
Hospice is covered by Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance, private pay or charitable care. Hospice Care Team members are on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Hospice services are covered by Medicare or Medicaid, private insurance, private pay or charitable care. This care is provided to all in need of our services regardless of age, sex, race, creed, marital status, sexual preference, color, national origin, religion, citizenship status, veteran status, illness, handicap, disability or ability to pay.
It is possible that your loved one will improve, resulting in discharge from hospice services. Or, you may decide to stop hospice care because you believe aggressive, curative care is needed. The hospice services can easily be resumed if needed at a later time.
