From the April 2008 issue of Soiree:
I can’t really define what “supposed to” means, but it is not an intellectual or cognitive thing. It comes from somewhere deeper than the cerebral cortex. I think I know what people mean when they say they have a “gut feeling” about something. It is intuitive and not from a rational source. I actually think many of us have such experiences, but we often don’t listen to them.
My change to hospice practice was a result of an almost uncontrollable drive, but not an impulsive one. It took 17 years to complete. After the initial idea in 1980, I first openly acknowledged the thought in 1992, and only in 1997 did I make a complete change. I had a lot of “ground work” to do before I could begin a new life in medicine.
This change in my mid-life has really given me a new energy and forward looking perspective. I actually like going to work every day, anxious with anticipation to see what the new day will bring.
