The Catch of a Lifetime

By arhospice on July 16th, 2019

Ask any fisherman and he will tell you that fishing is the sport of hope. Bob would spend hours on the lake waters competing in bass fishing tournaments and hoping for the “big one’.

When he came to Arkansas Hospice, Inc, he thought his days of fishing were only a memory.  Confined to a wheelchair and needing attentive care, it seemed an impossible feat that he would ever anchor in the lake and cast his rod again. That’s when his social worker contacted Arkansas Hospice Foundation.

Bringing the joy of fishing to hospice patients is a part of comfort care for patients like Bob.

Through the thoughtful gifts of donors, Arkansas Hospice Foundation secured a boat in a nearby marina. Then, they enlisted his nurses, a social worker, and his family to help Bob embark on one last fishing trip.

Just like his younger days, Bob checked the weather reports, prepared his gear, and woke up before dawn.  His team wheeled him onto the boat, Together, they set off for just the right fishing hole.

When they found the perfect spot, they anchored the boat. With the lake breeze at his back, the right lure on his rod, Bob cast his line out into the waters …and caught a small mouth bass.

Was it a bass that fishing tales are made of?  If you ask Bob, he’ll tell you … it was the catch of a lifetime.
