“Until one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul remains unawakened.” — Anatole France
Pets hold a special place in our hearts, providing us with unconditional love, companionship, and endless joy. They are our loyal friends, always there to offer comfort and support. Well, unless it’s a cat. Cats mostly choose when to offer comfort and support, with their OWN comfort at the top of the list of things to consider. It’s nothing personal, it just IS. Whereas a dog will fling itself at you, in joy and in sorrow, with no motivation other than to BE with you.
As we celebrate Animal Awareness Month, it’s a time to reflect on the importance of treating all animals with kindness, respect, and compassion.
Our animal friends bring so much happiness into our lives, reminding us of the beauty and simplicity of unconditional love. They teach us valuable lessons about responsibility, empathy, and the importance of nurturing relationships. They have an incredible ability to bring people together, fostering a sense of community and connection.
Our pets are as individual as ourselves. While I may be a cat person, others love reptiles and find joy and comfort in their unique existence. (Slight shudder). Some are furry, some are feathered, some are scaled, and some live on and support our farms and families.
Our pets trust us with their wellbeing on every level; for nutrition and hydration, for shelter from the elements, and at times to make difficult decisions about their health.
Animal Awareness Month serves as a reminder to be mindful of the needs of all animals, not just our beloved pets. It’s an opportunity to become educated about the importance of animal welfare, promoting responsible pet ownership, and advocating for the protection of all creatures, big and small.
Also, let’s remember that Arkansas Hospice recognizes the positive influence that pets can have on patients. As a result, we have a thriving Therapy Dog Program that offers volunteers with certified therapy dogs the opportunity to visit patients in nursing homes and our inpatient facilities.
Let us take this month to raise awareness about the significance of adoption, spaying and neutering, and supporting animal shelters and rescue organizations. By doing so, we can make a positive impact on the lives of countless animals, giving them a chance to experience the love and care they deserve.
So, let’s celebrate our pet companions and dedicate ourselves to being responsible stewards of their well-being. How wonderful it would be to create a world where all animals are treated with kindness, where their voices are heard, and their lives are valued.
