What Does Wellness Mean to You?

April 2021

“Nothing in nature blooms all year. Be patient with yourself.” — Karen Salmansohn

We, the Employee Wellness Council, encourage you to speak your truth about what wellness means to you as you navigate the present, this very moment. Reflecting on this past year, the few months of this new year, and contemplating where we are headed now, wellness is very much in the mix. It SHOULD be to balance our work/life situations, shouldn’t it? And what exactly does that mean?

For each of us, just as we grieve a loved one’s death or mourn our losses differently, so too do we cope with everyday life differently as we try to be health conscious and well-intended.

What a year it has been! Those who were ill with COVID-19; those who cared for family members who were ill with COVID-19; those who were in isolation for exposure, or illness or restrictions and those who suffered the anguish of aloneness from any of these situations. Those who had loved ones die from COVID-19 or had loved ones die from other diseases; those who could not be with loved ones who were dying; those who could not bury their dead or who were forced to postpone the normal rituals or memorials that aid in coping following a death. Isolation, illness, and death. What a year, all while continuing to work and adapt and shapeshift into what is needed at any given moment. Remote work for some, in-person care for our most fragile. The list continues: formal vacations put on hold, small and large trips that heal the soul, put on hold, sentinel events like weddings and graduations, put on hold, cancelled, or modified.  Could we not each write a book on this, the exhaustion and commitment, the disappointment and fortitude, the weariness and showing up, every single day, to not only meet, but exceed that which we have chosen to do?

What activities of wellness have helped you get through the challenges? What little strides did you make or good intentions about wellness or self-care did you embrace, and what wellness goals do you have now? What brings you comfort and peace when stressed? What brings you healing and clarity?

Your thoughts do matter so much, as does your wellbeing. Please share with us as we look to bring more relevance and intentional wellness messages and suggestions your way in our monthly emails and posters. Truly. We want to know.

Be Well …
